VFE-2 Project

This web portal provides access to experimental data which were obtained by DLR within the VFE-2 project. Wind tunnel tests were performed in the transonic wind tunnel in Göttingen (DNW-TWG) on a delta wing model of 65° sweep angle which was equipped with sharp as well as with rounded leading edges. Surface pressure and flow velocity distributions are available from PSP (Pressure Sensitive Paint) and PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) measurements.

The Second International Vortex Flow Experiment (VFE-2) has been carried out from 2003 to 2008 within the framework of the task group AVT-113 of NATO’s Research and Technology Organization (RTO). Chaired by Dr. J. Lamar (NASA) and Prof. Dr. D. Hummel (Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany), the objectives of this task group were to perform new wind tunnel tests on a delta wing by using modern measurement techniques and to compare these data with results of numerical state-of-the-art codes.

A vortex system consisting of an inner and outer primary vortex develops above the VFE-2 delta wing with rounded leading edges. This particular case (M = 0.4, Rmac = 3 million) is available as free data sample.
